Introduction

Nirmala Sitharaman is an Indian economist, politician and a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She is currently serving as the Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs of the Government of India since 2019. She is also a member of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament, representing Karnataka since 2016 and previously represented Andhra Pradesh from 2014 to 2016.

Nirmala_Sitharamanan was born on 18 August 1959 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. She completed her Master’s degree in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. She also holds a Master of Philosophy degree in Economics.

Sitharaman began her career as a lecturer in economics at Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu. She later joined the National Commission for Women and served as a member from 2003 to 2005. In 2006, Sitharaman joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

She was appointed as the party’s spokesperson in 2010. In 2014, she was elected to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the Indian Parliament. Sitharaman was appointed as the Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance and the Minister of State in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs in May 2014. She was then promoted to the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Commerce and Industry in September 2014. In 2017, Sitharaman was appointed as the Defence Minister of India. She became the second woman to hold this position after Indira Gandhi. In 2019, Sitharaman was appointed as the Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs of the Government of India.

She is the second woman to hold the position of Finance Minister after Indira Gandhi. Sitharaman is a recipient of several awards, including the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award in India.
